Book First, Plan Later

The cardinal rule of mistake fares: book immediately, ask questions later. Flights at 80% off sell out in minutes once a deal alert goes out to tens of thousands of subscribers. If the dates work roughly, book it. Most airlines allow free cancellation within 24 hours under DOT rules, giving you a window to confirm plans before committing.

Book Directly with the Airline

Book on the airline's website, not a third-party OTA. Wait at least 24 to 48 hours before booking non-refundable hotels or tours around the mistake fare. Airlines do cancel these tickets, typically within 24 to 72 hours of discovery. If your ticket gets cancelled, you want your accommodation to be cancellable too.

Will Airlines Honor the Fare?

This is the most common question, and the answer is: usually yes, but not always. The DOT does not require airlines to honor mistake fares in the US. Airlines may cancel tickets and issue a full refund. However, most major carriers choose to honor the fare rather than deal with the PR fallout of mass cancellations.

Delta, United, and American have honored mistake fares in recent years for the majority of cases. The fare is more likely to be honored if it was live for more than a few hours, if many people booked it, and if the airline's own systems issued the confirmation. The more obscure the error and the more extreme the discount, the higher the chance of cancellation.

Book it. Use the 24-hour window to decide if you actually want to go. You cannot catch a mistake fare by thinking about it.
