This is especially true for popular routes like New York to Tokyo, Los Angeles to London, or San Francisco to Singapore. On these competitive routes, award seats in premium cabins can disappear within hours when they do appear, while other dates on the same route may not show availability until closer to departure.

Every airline sets its own booking window for when you can search and book award flights. Most U.S. carriers open their calendars around 330 days out, while many international carriers go further, some as far as 361 days.

The program you use to book matters as much as the airline you fly. If you want to fly ANA business class, booking through Aeroplan (355 days) gives you an 18-day head start over United MileagePlus (337 days). Those 18 days can be the difference between getting the seat and missing it entirely.
One important nuance: when you book a flight operated by one airline through a different loyalty program, your booking window is limited by whichever program is more restrictive. Even if an airline releases award space 360 days out, the partner program you are using to book might only allow searches 331 days out. Always check the booking window of both the operating airline and the program you plan to use.

Some airlines guarantee a certain number of award seats on every flight. British Airways and Qatar Airways are both known for making award seats available when the booking calendar opens. On these carriers, being ready on day one virtually guarantees you a seat, even in business class on popular routes.
