A lounge visit typically includes complimentary food and drinks, faster Wi-Fi than the terminal, showers at many locations, and enough quiet to get work done or decompress before a long flight. Walk-in access costs $50 or more per visit at most lounges. The right credit card eliminates that cost entirely, and in many cases extends the benefit to a guest traveling with you.

There are several lounge ecosystems worth understanding: Priority Pass, the Amex Centurion network, Delta Sky Club, United Club, American Admirals Club, Capital One Lounges, and Chase Sapphire Lounges. Each works differently, and the cards that unlock them are distinct. Knowing which you want determines which card to carry.

American Airlines Admirals Club

Admirals Club lounges are available at American Airlines hubs including Dallas/Fort Worth, Miami, Charlotte, Chicago O'Hare, and New York JFK, among others. They offer food, beverages, and Wi-Fi. Card-based access is controlled by a single co-branded card issued by Citi.

The Citi AAdvantage Executive card is the only credit card that grants full Admirals Club membership. It covers the cardholder plus their immediate family traveling with them, or up to two guests. For frequent American Airlines travelers based at AA hubs, the membership can easily offset the card's annual fee. A same-day American Airlines or oneworld partner flight is required for entry.

Capital One Lounges

Capital One has been building its own proprietary lounge network, with locations currently open at Dallas/Fort Worth, Denver, Dulles, and Las Vegas. The lounges are modern, well-designed, and feature local food concepts, cocktail bars, and wellness areas. Access is tied to Capital One travel cards.

The Venture X is the standout value here: unlimited lounge access plus two free guests per visit, on a card whose $300 annual travel credit effectively reduces the net cost to $95. The network is still growing, so its utility depends heavily on whether your home airport or frequent connections have a Capital One Lounge. Venture X cardholders also receive Priority Pass membership, making it one of the most lounge-complete cards available.

Amex Centurion Lounges

Centurion Lounges are Amex's proprietary lounge network, widely considered the best card-linked lounges in the US. They feature full-service restaurants with menus designed by local chefs, well-stocked bars, and spa services at select locations. The network is smaller than Priority Pass — roughly 40 locations globally — but the quality is consistently higher than most third-party lounges.

Access requires the Amex Platinum or the Amex Business Platinum. Cardholders can bring up to two guests free of charge; additional guests are charged $50 each. Amex introduced a same-day flight requirement in 2023, so you must be flying on the same day to gain entry.

Chase Sapphire Lounges

Chase has been building its own proprietary lounge network under the Sapphire brand. Locations have opened at Boston Logan, Hong Kong, Las Vegas, New York JFK, Philadelphia, Phoenix, and a handful of other airports. Access requires the Chase Sapphire Reserve and is unlimited for cardholders with two free guests per visit.

The Sapphire Lounge network is still expanding and currently covers fewer airports than Priority Pass or Centurion, but the lounges themselves are spacious and well-appointed. If you frequently transit through a Sapphire Lounge airport, the Reserve's lounge access alone can justify a meaningful portion of its annual fee.

Delta Sky Club

Delta Sky Club lounges are available at Delta hub airports and offer food, drinks, showers, and fast Wi-Fi. Access is tied to Delta co-branded cards and the Amex Platinum, all issued by American Express. Since February 2025, all card-based access is capped at a set number of annual visits rather than unlimited.

As of February 1, 2025, Delta capped Sky Club access for all credit cardholders. The Delta SkyMiles Reserve gives 15 visits per program year; the Amex Platinum gives 10. Neither card offers unlimited access unless you spend $75,000 or more on the card in a calendar year. The Delta SkyMiles Platinum card lost Sky Club access entirely in 2024 and is no longer an option for lounge access. Stacking both the Reserve and the Amex Platinum gives you 25 combined visits per year. Additional visits can be purchased for $50 each.

Priority Pass: The Widest Network

Priority Pass is the world's largest independent airport lounge network, covering more than 1,300 lounges across 148 countries. It operates independently of any airline, so your access works whether you're flying Delta, United, Lufthansa, or anyone else. At airports with no dedicated card-linked lounge, Priority Pass is usually your only card-based option.

United Club

United Club lounges are available at United hub airports including Chicago O'Hare, Houston Intercontinental, Newark, Denver, and Los Angeles. The lounges offer food, beverages, showers at select locations, and Wi-Fi. Access via credit card comes through United co-branded cards issued by Chase.

The United Club Infinite Card is the only co-branded card that grants full United Club membership. The Explorer and Quest cards include just two single-use passes annually, enough for occasional travelers but not frequent United flyers. United Club access also requires a same-day United or Star Alliance flight for entry.
