American Express runs two hotel booking programs that sit above a standard reservation but below what top-tier loyalty status provides. Fine Hotels + Resorts (FHR) is the more generous of the two — Platinum and Centurion exclusive, with a fixed package including breakfast, guaranteed late checkout, and a $100 property credit. The Hotel Collection (THC) is the broader program: fewer perks, a two-night minimum, but open to Gold cardholders as well, with over 1,300 properties that don't overlap entirely with FHR's 1,800+.
Both programs book through the same Amex Travel portal, both earn 5x Membership Rewards points on prepaid stays (for Platinum cardholders), and both count toward the $600 annual hotel credit on Platinum cards. The key is knowing which program applies to your card and which properties fall under each.
FHR vs. THC: Side-by-Side

The guaranteed 4pm checkout is the single biggest differentiator between FHR and THC. At properties where late checkout costs $50–$150, or is only available to top-tier status holders, FHR delivers it confirmed at booking. THC doesn't include it at all — your checkout time depends on standard hotel policy or whatever loyalty status you hold.
What Every FHR Stay Includes
Fine Hotels + Resorts attaches a fixed benefit package to every reservation at over 1,800 properties — Park Hyatt, St. Regis, Waldorf Astoria, Ritz-Carlton, Six Senses, Aman, and more. The perks apply regardless of your loyalty status with that brand.
| Benefit | Details | Est. Value |
|---|---|---|
Room Upgrade | Upon arrival, subject to availability; certain room categories excluded | $50–$400+ |
Daily Breakfast for Two | Minimum $60/room/day; must charge to room for credit at checkout | $60–$120+/stay |
$100 Property Credit | Eligible charges vary by property: spa, dining, minibar, activities | $100 |
Guaranteed 4pm Checkout | Confirmed at booking; no negotiating at the front desk | $50–$150 |
Noon Check-in | When available; not guaranteed but honored when rooms are ready | $25–$75 |
Complimentary Wi-Fi | Even at properties with mandatory Wi-Fi fees; credit applied at checkout | $0–$30/stay |
What Every THC Stay Includes
The Hotel Collection covers 1,300+ upscale properties and is the entry point for Gold cardholders who don't have access to FHR. The benefit package is leaner, but the $100 credit and room upgrade still represent real value — particularly on longer stays where you'd spend the credit anyway.
| Benefit | Details | Est. Value |
|---|---|---|
Room Upgrade | Upon arrival, subject to availability; one category above booked room | $50–$200+ |
$100 Property Credit | Spa, food & beverage, or other on-property charges; cannot offset room rate | $100 |
The Hotel Collection requires a minimum of two consecutive nights to qualify for benefits. A one-night stay at a THC property booked through Amex Travel will not trigger the upgrade or $100 credit. If you're planning a one-night stay, check whether the property also participates in FHR — some overlap, and FHR has no minimum stay requirement.
The $600 Annual Hotel Credit
As of September 2025, the Amex Platinum card includes a $600 annual hotel credit (issued as two $300 semi-annual statement credits) applicable to prepaid FHR or THC bookings made through American Express Travel. The credit applies to both programs — not just FHR — which matters for Platinum holders who may find THC rates more approachable at certain destinations.
The Business Platinum carries the same $600 structure. Cardholders holding both the personal and Business Platinum can apply separate $300 credits to separate bookings in the same period. Gold cardholders do not receive the $600 hotel credit, but still receive THC benefits on qualifying stays.
Use THC for the $100 Credit on Two-Night Stays at Non-FHR Properties
Not every upscale hotel participates in FHR. THC covers a different (and in some cases broader) set of properties, particularly at the upper-upscale tier below ultra-luxury. If a property you want isn't in FHR, check whether it's in THC. A two-night THC stay still delivers a $100 credit and room upgrade — and counts toward the Platinum's $600 annual hotel credit.
Book One-Night FHR Stays to Maximize Per-Stay Credits
The $100 property credit applies once per stay, not per night. Two separate one-night FHR stays at different properties each trigger their own $100 credit and $300 hotel credit eligibility. For flexible travelers, two shorter FHR stays outperform one longer stay in credits extracted. THC doesn't offer this flexibility — you need two nights minimum per stay to get anything.
Use the "Exceptional Value" Badge on FHR Properties
Some FHR properties are flagged with an "Exceptional Value" badge in the Amex Travel portal, indicating the property has agreed to offer its lowest available rate through FHR. The FHR rate with all perks often undercuts or matches the direct rate at these properties. Use the MaxFHR tool to search for the least expensive FHR options across destinations and find price calendars.
Pay with Cash, Not Points
You can pay for FHR and THC bookings with Membership Rewards points, but you'll only receive 1 cent per point. Amex points are typically worth 1.5–2 cents each through airline transfer partners. Pay cash, earn the 5x points on the booking (Amex Platinum earns 5x on prepaid hotel stays through Amex Travel), and save your points for airline transfers where the value is materially higher.
Stacking with Hotel Loyalty Benefits
Both FHR and THC operate separately from hotel loyalty programs, but they're not mutually exclusive. When you book through either program at a Hyatt, Marriott, or Hilton property, you can often still earn points and elite night credits toward your loyalty status — though this is hotel-dependent and should be confirmed with the property directly before check-in.
If you hold elite status in the hotel's loyalty program, some of those benefits can layer on top of FHR or THC perks at check-in. A Hyatt Globalist staying at a Park Hyatt through FHR may receive both the FHR upgrade and their Globalist suite upgrade request. Property-dependent and not guaranteed, but worth asking. The guaranteed 4pm checkout from FHR often exceeds what even mid-tier elite status provides at the same property — making it particularly valuable for travelers who haven't yet earned top-tier status.
FHR gives you what mid-tier status can't guarantee: confirmed late checkout and breakfast at properties where status perks are discretionary. THC gives Gold cardholders a taste of the same — minus breakfast and the checkout guarantee.
Which Cards Access Each Program
FHR access is restricted to Platinum, Business Platinum, and Centurion cards. THC extends to Gold and Business Gold as well — making it the more accessible of the two programs. Delta co-branded cards are excluded from both. Companion cardholders on a Platinum or Centurion account are not eligible for FHR benefits, though additional cardmembers on Platinum and Centurion accounts are eligible for THC.
| Card | FHR Access | THC Access | $600 Hotel Credit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yes | Yes | $600/year | |
| Yes | Yes | $600/year | |
Amex Centurion (Black) | Yes | Yes | Included |
| No | Yes | No | |
Amex Business Gold | No | Yes | No |
Amex Green / Delta cards | No | No | No |
Back-to-back stays at the same property — booked by the same cardmember or cardmembers traveling together — are treated as a single stay for both FHR and THC. You won't receive two sets of credits by booking consecutive nights as separate reservations if you're staying in the same room or traveling in the same party. This restriction applies within a 24-hour window at the same property. Splitting stays between two different properties on the same trip is permitted.
How to Book
All FHR and THC bookings must be made through American Express Travel: at amextravel.com, the Amex Travel App, or by calling the number on the back of your card. You cannot book directly with the hotel and receive program benefits retroactively. Reservations must be prepaid with your eligible Amex card to receive both the program perks and, for Platinum holders, the semi-annual hotel credit.
Once booked, the hotel receives a notification from Amex identifying you as an FHR or THC guest. Property credits are applied at checkout — you don't need to present anything at the front desk. For FHR, the guaranteed 4pm checkout is confirmed in your booking details; if a property questions it, your Amex Travel confirmation documents the benefit. For THC, late checkout is not guaranteed and depends on the property's standard policy.
